Thousands of people across Australia are spending Christmas in isolation with coronavirus cases continuing to soar, particularly in New South Wales, and hospitalisations slowly increasing. But its slightly better news in Victoria amid six new deaths.

Face masks in NSW became mandatory on Christmas Eve amid soaring cases and the threat of Omicron.

Residents aged 12 and over will be required to wear a mask in all indoor settings, except in a private home, in public transport and hospitality venues. Face coverings can be removed for eating and drinking, when training at a gym and in a car if travelling with the same member of a household. Businesses can refuse entry to shoppers and patrons but it will be up to owner to"exercise judgement on what is appropriate" for the wellbeing of staff and customers.

Testing has increased across the country ahead of families gathering for Christmas and New Year.
