The families of two Australians who went missing in a deep-sea tragedy almost three years ago have pleaded with the federal government to back them in their quest for answers. 7NEWS

A 2022 report into the fate of the missing ship, produced by the Panama Maritime Authority in its role as the flag state of the sunken vessel, is set to be analysed by an International Maritime Organization committee featuring flag, port and coastal states within weeks.

Maritime records show the ship had a history of mechanical problems and breakdowns. Equipment and training issues also came to the attention of authorities. Questions by 7NEWS.com.au to Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong were directed to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, which said it had monitored the development of the investigation as a “substantially interested state”, allowing it to provide updates to local families.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority would not comment on technical details of the Panama report because the ship was not Australian-flagged and did not depart from one of our ports.
