Ms Vowels, a 40-year-old teacher, toldthe couple had bought their first home in Newcastle, north of Sydney, before the trip and have had to watch on anxiously as the money they had saved for renovations ran out.The Vowels had just bought their first home when the travel ban hit.
The family feel like they haven't been offered much government support since the travel ban was imposed. They had to choose between paying $70,000 for repatriation flights, or waiting six weeks for their return flights to be refunded. They chose the latter, but have been bumped off multiple return flights since.Mr Vowels, a paramedic, said he wished Mr Morrison could feel the anxiety the family do."We have tried tirelessly.
The Vowels said the only reason they have gotten by for as long as they have is through the support of locals."The British people here have been really charitable, really kind to us and helped us out. So we've seen silver linings of all the bad situation that we've been in."With almost 30,000 Australians stranded overseas at the moment, Mr Morrison last week raised the cap for returning Australians from 4000 to 6000 a week.
"The State Government has put a cap on the number of hotel rooms that are available and we're saying to them, and the Prime Minister said for weeks, please, lift those caps so that we can bring more Australians back," Mr Dutton said.
