The Melbourne derby returns to AAMI Park this Saturday for the first time since the shocking pitch invasion in December.
Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City will meet at AAMI Park this weekend for the first time since December, when 150 fans stormed the pitch.
Victoria Police and Football Australia immediately launched an investigation into the incident and the game’s governing body later slapped Melbourne Victory with a set of record sanctions. “In the lead-up to the match, the PFA will continue to ensure that any concerns raised by the players are effectively addressed and all possible steps are taken,” a PFA spokesman said.
In the aftermath of the pitch invasion, Football Australia conducted a review that resulted in the organisation imposing sanctions against Melbourne Victory that amounted to $550,000. There will be no specifically allocated supporter seating for Melbourne Victory fans at away games for the 2022-23 men’s season either, and the club will have to work with Football Australia to ensure the return of fans for the following season.
The threat of a ten-point deduction for any instance of serious supporter misconduct also hangs over the club’s head for this season and the following three seasons.
