A woman in her 50s died after a shark attack at Woorim Beach on Bribie Island, Queensland. The beach has been closed until further notice.

Paramedics from the Queensland Ambulance Service were called to Woorim Beach shortly before 5pm on Sunday. A woman in her 50s was reportedly attacked by a shark while swimming near the south-east end of Bribie Island. She sustained serious injuries to her upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene. Woorim Beach will remain closed until further notice.

Unlike the calm and protected western side of Bribie Island, the eastern coast is an open beach known for its strong currents and unpredictable conditions. There are a lot of swimming groups that swim along here, morning and afternoon, according to a local resident. Drumlines, which are used to catch sharks using bait and large hooks, are used at Woorim Beach. This is the third shark attack in Queensland in less than three months, and the second fatal attack in just over a month
