A man found guilty of recklessly causing harm to his newborn baby by violently shaking her has been bashed in prison and is withdrawn, depressed and suicidal, an Adelaide court hears.
A man found guilty of recklessly causing harm to his newborn baby by violently shaking her has provided "no explanation", "contrition" or "remorse", an Adelaide court has heard. The judge found his lack of proper explanation for the injuries left her with not "much to work with"Daniel James Morgan caused head injuries and life threatening harm to his daughter at their home in Paralowie in Adelaide's north in 2018.
"Even at this late stage, if there were some sort of acknowledgement that something went wrong in his own mind, that he would get some help," she said. "I've got a young man who's lost control to such an extent that he's violently shaking his own daughter and caused her catastrophic injuries," she said.Morgan's defence lawyer, Adam Richards, said his client had a happy childhood and did not have alcohol or drug issues at the time the incident occurred.Mr Richards said Morgan had also been attacked in prison by "two men who went into his cell and bashed him for a period of time".
After the incident, Morgan rang triple-0, telling the operator "all of a sudden she's just stopped breathing … just like she's not alert".
