The union warns the new gig workforce, which will not get union pay and conditions, is the first sign of the “Amazon effect” on the transport industry.

The drivers, who would be independent contractors and not be covered by union pay and conditions, would make up 25 per cent of Fed-Ex’s business-to-customer workforce and grow to 50 per cent at an unspecified date.

“We believe the owner-driver opportunity will attract drivers who already have their own vehicles. By offering more ways for people to join us, we can address the skill shortages all industries including ours currently face.” “This disgraceful attempt by FedEx to force drivers to deliver a parcel every six minutes is a deadly proposition,” Mr Kaine said.

The FedEx spokesman said the company was working with its employees “on employment options, which allow for the expansion of our workforce to meet customer needs”. The union said the consignment amount would require drivers to deliver at least one parcel every six minutes for 10 hours straight.
