A plan to expand Perth's ferry network with five new electric ferries and two new stops has been met with mixed responses. While the government argues it will improve connectivity, the opposition criticizes the focus on this issue amidst cost-of-living concerns.

The government announced a $107 million plan called 'Metronet on the Swan' to expand Perth 's Swan River ferry network with five new electric ferries and two new stops if re-elected in March. The opposition criticized the plan, saying the government has its priorities wrong by focusing on this as its first election promise. Water safety and parking issues have also been raised due to the extra ferries on the river, but Labor says it would consult widely and is confident a solution can be found.

The electric ferries would be built in WA and would operate every 15 to 30 minutes, with a top speed of 20 knots and the capacity to hold more than 130 passengers. Two extra stops would be built near the Canning Bridge bus interchange, and at Matilda Bay to facilitate access to the University of Western Australia. Sailing clubs have expressed concern about the addition of ferry services into areas used by recreational boats, warning that expanding the ferry service will be dangerous and could force them to close
