This year’s Big Thick Energy body positive festival is even bigger and better.
When performance artist Demon Derriere first launched the first Big Thick Energy body positive festival, its performance nights, workshops and markets sold out immediately.
Jeff McCann, Demon Derriere and Krista Herrington will take part in the Big Thick Energy body positive festival.“A lot of organisations or people ask me, ‘You’ve already done Big Thick Energy, why are you doing it again?’,” she says. “I say, ‘You’re not just going to have one fat event and that’s enough.’
, which features Derriere and fellow performers Kelly Ann Doll and Porcelain Alice exploring the history of neo-burlesque, are crucial ways to change ingrained ideas about body size. “I’ll be performing with music and Auslan,” she says. “A hearing interpreter will show me the words and explain the music to me as I perform. And I will perform that out to everyone else.
“I had people share extremely intimate stories with me or just come up to me crying,” she says. “Many have felt so isolated during COVID, our bodies changed within that time and we felt alone. Creating this sense of community clearly reached out to people who were having a hard time.”
