West Coast Fever have secured their first Super Netball premiership, downing the Melbourne Vixens in front of a parochial home crowd in Perth on Sunday night to end a 25-year title drought, 70-59.
The Vixens, the 2020 premiers and 2021 wooden spooners, beat the Fever twice in the home-and-away season to claim the minor premiership, but went into Sunday’s decider as the underdog after going down to the Fever in the major semi-final last month. The Fever led from start to finish, turning a four-point quarter-time lead into six points at half-time and nine points at three-quarter-time.
“When you first get into the game as a young kid, these are the moments you feel like may never come, but they’re the things that get you out of bed every single day,” he said.“I can’t believe we’ve played our best netball under the pressure of a grand final in front of 13,000 people, and in doing it, created history for the first time in 25 years. It’s ridiculously amazing.”
“It means a lot, knowing that I’m even here by myself. My family is not here, and being able to stand strong and have this amazing week behind me, and come out week in, week out, and being muscled and being pushed and being able to hold the ball and shoot it, it means a lot. I’m happy that I was able to step across that line today.”
“Fever played a great game, but I think we let ourselves down with some simple execution and some basic stuff, on top of the Fever’s defensive work as well. Super disappointed, it goes without saying when you play elite sport and you’re out there competing, it hurts, but I’m proud of what we’ve achieved to get here.”Jo Weston attempts an intercept for the Vixens.
The Fever set their intent early in the decider, finishing the first quarter with an 18-14 lead. They demonstrated good team connection and attacking pressure.
