Two hundred competitors and 40 volunteers cannot attend the first Finke Desert Race in two years thanks to the recent Victorian COVID-19 outbreak, which has seen greater Melbourne plunged into its fourth lockdown.

Organisers and competitors in this year's Finke Desert Race are devastated by the Northern Territory government's decision to declare the entire state of Victoria a COVID-19 hotspot.

"There were 200 or so competitors that were registered from Victoria. If they haven't left the state yet, they can't come," he said. "[I have] an understanding of the Motorcycling Australia rules and the Motorsport Australia rules, which are the two governing bodies," she said.
