Acclaimed Indigenous filmmaker Warwick Thornton's latest work is a television series that re-imagines the colonisation of Australia.
Acclaimed Indigenous filmmaker Warwick Thornton is no stranger to making confronting and thought-provoking movies about the obstacles faced by First Nations people.
"It's total rock and roll Australia, vampire-hunting madness, silly, stupid, idiotic, you know, with an undertone of incredibly important issues for Australia," he told 7.30.Thornton, who is listed as executive producer, co-creator, one of the directors, co-writer and director of photography for the show, said the idea came after he made a discovery about the First Fleet.
Thornton knows some people might baulk at the messaging, but the overarching concept was to deliver a high-octane action fantasy series, laced with humour. "At the heart of it, it's a family story. Tyson is a kind of father figure to Shanika, whose parents were killed by vampires.Rob Collins and Shantae Barnes-Cowan play Tyson and Shanika.
"Then we can come back here to the Adelaide studios and we can book out the stages, we can do big construction, we can do post [production] here, we can do sound mixing, we can do all the visual effects we need. So, you know, for us it was, it was a no-brainer, really.Show to screen internationallyNot only are Thornton and Fletcher hoping to win over Australian audiences, Firebite will screen worldwide after being picked up by American cable network AMC.
"They made Walking Dead, yet they also made Breaking Bad and they also made Mad Men, so they have a kind of history of big genre shows.
