With 450,000 Pfizer doses just hours away from Australian shores, Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr Sonya Bennett says 80 per cent of the population “will have their first dose” in about a week.
Australia secured a vaccine sharing agreement with the Johnson government in the United Kingdom which would see four million Pfizer doses sent down under to boost the vaccine rollout.The first two Qantas planes departed Heathrow today, but Dr Bennett said Australia was fortunate as it was set to receive more vaccines than expected.
“Additional supply is really reassuring and does mean we would just like to encourage all Australians, given the circumstances, to book in and go and get their first dose as soon as possible.” Off the back of rapid TGA testing and approval of half a million vaccines from Singapore, the deputy chief medical officer was confident the first batch from the UK would undergo a similar process.
Dr Bennett said due to an uptick in supply, she expected the country would hit the first dose targets “very quickly”.
