From high-profile cases to leading major change within the legal profession, Susan Kiefel has steered the court through some rough waters during her time as chief justice of the High Court of Australia.

The High Court of Australia will mark the end of an era today in Canberra when it formally farewells the first-ever female chief justice, Susan Kiefel.

While many of her male colleagues in the law were enjoying a private education and places in the best universities, she was a legal secretary after leaving school at 15, and studying law part-time. "That was uncharted territory for me, and it was certainly, I imagined, uncharted territory for Chief Justice Kiefel," Mr Bornstein said.

Astrid Haban-Beer says Susan Kiefel "masterfully" presided over some "tough times" during her time as chief justice."It really did set the tone in a way that made everyone know that there is no way that this kind of behaviour is accepted in the legal profession," she said.

The unanimous ruling led to high-profile politicians from all parties, including Barnaby Joyce, disqualified from sitting in the parliament.Chief Justice Kiefel overseeing the Senate at the opening of the 47th Parliament in 2022."She was quite concerned to avoid where possible … seven disparate judgements, giving us seven different approaches to the constitution," Associate Professor Roberts said.
