Australia's Davis Cup campaign is set to reap the benefits of Alex de Minaur's cautious approach to the injury that dashed his Australian Open hopes.

But the 21-year-old was cleared to return at this week's ATP Tour event in Acapulco, Mexico where he lost 3-6 6-4 6-3 in the opening round to Serbia's world No.50 Miomir Kecmanovic in just under two hours. "He still wanted to play the Australian Open even with the tear he had in the abdominal muscle," Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt told reporters on Tuesday.
