Residents across the nation are being asked to preserve power use after the energy market regulator said five states could be hit by blackouts from Tuesday night.

To limit the risk of power blackouts, residents are advised to reduce their energy consumption during peak usage hours.

Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said Australians should not be turning off power needed for their comfort and safety but urged residents to consider pulling the plug on anything"not necessary" amid the nation's energy crisis. "There has been a general request to say anything which is surplus. Now I expect most of the things would've been turned off already because power bills have been higher, so swimming pool filters and swimming pool heaters, outside lighting which is not necessary at any particular time.

An alert was also issued for Queenslanders to unplug by 5pm, but an updated statement said generators were directed by the AEMO to provide “sufficient power generation” to cover the shortfall. The DMO shows a rise by between 8.5 per cent to 14.1 per cent in New South Wales, meaning customers could face a price hike between $119 and $227.
