Flames engulfed the electric vehicle and spread to consume four others before firefighters arrived at 8.30pm.

The lithium-ion battery had recently been detached from the luxury vehicle and was being stored close by in the same parking lot on Airport Dr in Mascot, Fire and Rescue NSW said on Tuesday.“Flames had engulfed a luxury electric car before spreading to another four motor vehicles,” FRNSW said. “A battery, which had recently been detached from the luxury car and stored in the lot, was quickly identified as having sparked the blaze.Five cars were destroyed in a blaze at Sydney Airport on Monday evening.A lithium-ion battery had been detached from the car and was being stored in the parking lot on Airport Drive, Mascot.FRNSW extinguished the blaze and have been analysing the scene to develop best practice for emerging technologies.

The aftermath was also examined by FRNSW’s Safety of Alternative and Renewable Energy Technologies team to develop new insights about electric vehicle fire responses. “These insights will assist them in continually develop best practice for emergency response to lithium-related fires, and informing industry on how to manage the risks associated with emerging technologies,” FRNSW said.
