The Virginia high school football coach who inspired the movie Remember The Titans dies aged 84.
Much of the 2000 Disney film covers the team's uphill battle to win the state championship over 15 all-white teams. But the accuracy of the film's portrayal of Boone has been called into question in recent years.the film's depiction of the coach as an inspiring leader who unified the community was heavily distorted.
"Herman Boone treated everybody horribly, no matter what race," Greg Paspatis, a kicker on Boone's 1977 team and a historian for the Alexandria Sportsman's Club, told the website. Boone was fired in 1979 due to allegations of player abuse and complaints by other assistants, according to the Washington Post.
Boone's defensive coach Bill Yoast — who was portrayed in the film by Will Patton — died in May, aged 94.
