With many of the usual stalwarts recovering from offseason surgeries, UTSA will allow newcomers a chance to shine in the spring game Friday at Alamodome.

UTSA Roadrunners running back Kevorian Barnes rushes Friday night, Dec. 2, 2022 at the Alamodome while North Texas Mean Green linebacker Kevin Wood tries to block him during the C-USA championship game.As running back Kevorian Barnes shifted to pick up a block in pass protection during UTSA’s regular-season finale against UTEP, he started to feel discomfort in his right shoulder.

Though Barnes said he initially felt hesitant to embrace contact after removing the harness he wore through pregame warmups, he resolved that he had already committed to surgery, meaning any further damage he sustained would be fixed up along the way. Though Barnes and safety Rashad Wisdom were limited participants in spring practice through the past month, many of the Roadrunners’ other standouts missed the period entirely, including quarterback Frank Harris, outside linebacker Trey Moore and wide receivers De’Corian Clark, Zakhari Franklin and Joshua Cephus.

For Barnes, spring practice work was limited mostly to individual noncontact drills. He said he wants to be more elusive next season, but most of his training has been limited to watching his teammates run through plays and imagining what juke or move he might turn to. In Barnes’ place, most of UTSA’s running back repetitions have gone to Vanderbilt transfer Rocko Griffin and junior Kaedric Cobbs, who is returning to full health after suffering a second ACL tear in three years at UTSA last spring.
