Former Labor MP Ernest Wong has been accused of lying to the Independent Commission Against Corruption after blaming an 'alcoholic blackout' for his failure to recall important information about alleged illegal donations given to the NSW Labor Party.

Former Labor MP Ernest Wong has been accused of lying to the Independent Commission Against Corruption after blaming an "alcoholic blackout" for his failure to recall important information about alleged illegal donations given to the NSW Labor Party. Mr Wong says he could not remember whether a second bag - containing donation forms and cash - was given to him at a Chinese Friends of Labor dinner in March of 2015.

Fronting an ICAC inquiry, Mr Wong maintains he did receive a bag containing tens of thousands of dollars in cash at the dinner who he claims Chinese billionaire property developer Huang Xiaomo offered to take from him. Counsel assisting the inquiry Scott Robertson said "there was no big bag of cash with tens of thousands of dollars at the dinner that night". "Of course there was, " Mr Wong replied.

UK Labour has 'turned its back on its own working class' | Sky News AustraliaUK Labour has 'turned its back on its own working class' | Sky News AustraliaEditor of Spiked Online Brendan O'Neill says “there is very little enthusiasm for the Labour Party” ahead of the UK general election on Thursday and says the party must 'reckon with itself' if it wants a future. \n\n“Corbynistas would argue that is because the media is owned by evil billionaires who want to stop Corbyn from getting into Downing Street, but in fact, it’s because many recognise that the Labour Party is a very problematic party right now,” he told Sky News host Chris Kenny. \n\n“This is a party that has turned its back on its own working class voters, who it now looks upon with utter contempt and has turned its back on democracy by wanting to overthrow the largest democratic vote in history - Brexit.' \n\nMr O'Neill said the party needed to be “roundly defeated” on Thursday “so that it might have a reckoning with itself and recover from this pretty awful period that it’s going through”. \n\nThe editor of Spiked Online said Brexit was “no longer just about leaving the European Union” it was now “a test of whether democracy in this country works”. \n\n“If Brexit doesn’t happen then it will look like democracy in this country doesn’t work,” he said. \n\nMr O'Neill also took aim at the UK’s response to the November 29 terrorist attack on London Bridge. \n\n“The response to this horrific Islamist attack was completely surreal,” he said. \n\n“Everyone says don’t even mention the I word, don’t even say Islamist because you might cause Islamophobia”. \n\nImage: AP
