Former Liberal Senate president Scott Ryan has been appointed high commissioner to Canada after retiring from Parliament earlier this year.
The announcement, made by Foreign Minister Marise Payne on Monday, means all Australia’s top diplomats to countries in the “Five Eyes” spy network are former Liberal Party politicians.“Our two countries work together closely through the Five Eyes group,” Senator Payne said, adding Canada was also a close partner in the United Nations, APEC, the World Trade Organisation and the OECD.
“Australia and Canada have a close relationship founded on shared values and experiences. We are proud liberal democracies and federal systems.” In the Five Eyes grouping, Mr Ryan joins Abbott-era attorney-general George Brandis serving in the United Kingdom, minister and close confidant to Malcolm Turnbull, Arthur Sinodinos, serving in the United States and former NSW state Liberal MP Patricia Forsythe in New Zealand.
