Former Senate president Scott Ryan, who resigned from parliament in October, will become Australia's top envoy to Canada, as the federal government announces several international diplomatic postings.
The government's former Senate president Scott Ryan, who quit the position in October this year, has been appointed as Australia's top diplomat to Canada.Mr Ryan spent more than a decade in parliament before quitting in recent monthsThe high commissioner position is one of the most senior international postings, given Canada's close intelligence relationship with Australia as Five Eyes nations, and as a member of the Commonwealth.
"Canada is a vital partner in a range of international forums, particularly the United Nations, APEC, WTO, G20 and the OECD," Senator Payne said. Mr Ryan resigned from parliament in October this year, after four years as Senate president and more than a decade in parliament. Senator Payne also announced diplomatic appointments to the United Nations in Geneva and Timor-Leste.
