Former NSW premier Mike Baird says the Liberal Party's failure to meet the nominations deadline for the September 14 council elections is a "tragedy", which is "hard to believe".The Liberal Party is considering its legal options after the NSW Electoral Commission denied its plea for an extension.
Mr Shields blamed a lack of resources at party headquarters for the failure and pointed the finger at party president Don Harwin, who he said was overseeing the local government nominations.Some would-be Liberal candidates are considering legal action against the party for its failure to nominate them.Mr Baird said he despaired for community-minded candidates who would be left on the sidelines.
On Sunday afternoon the party issued a statement calling on the commission to "urgently reconsider" its decision or face legal action. "This mistake is not just a technicality — it goes to the heart of ensuring a fair and transparent election." Mr Baird said he was "not close enough to the details" of the party's argument, but said it was a matter for the electoral commission.
