A former security guard paid to patrol Darwin's streets is sentenced to nine months home detention for his role in a 'brutal' and 'unprovoked' group attack on a man.
Borja Anton Canon, and two other guards, "brutally" attacked an intoxicated man, holding him down and kicking him multiple times.A former " blue shirt " security guard , who was part of a private firm paid millions of dollars to patrol Darwin 's streets by the NT government, has been sentenced to nine months home detention for his role in a "brutal" and "unprovoked" group attack on a man.
Court documents state that Anton Cano then joined the attack, kicking the victim in the back while he was laying on the ground. While the two other guards pinned the victim to the ground, holding down his hands and legs to stop him moving, Anton Cano again punched and kicked the man in the head. Anton Cano — who no longer works as a guard for the TPS — pleaded guilty to the single charge of recklessly endangering serious harm at the Darwin Local Court in May.On Friday, prosecutor Timara Callaghan argued a term of imprisonment was the only appropriate sentence.
Other than providing the victim a cup of water after ceasing their attack, Ms Callaghan said that at no point did the guards seek assistance or call an ambulance. Judge Franz said that while CCTV footage clearly showed the victim acting like a "pest" in the vicinity prior to the guards showing up, their conduct was "reckless and violent".
