Controversial former Victoria Police chief Simon Overland has been sacked as chief executive of an outer Melbourne council during what one councillor has likened to"the night of long knives".Two other chief executives have been sacked by the council in the last four years
Mr Overland was a Victorian police chief commissioner between 2009–2011, during the height of Melbourne's"gangland wars".Councillors point to power struggleSeveral councillors told the ABC that a group of councillors had been obsessed with power and had treated council staff appallingly. Councillor Tom Joseph said last night's meeting was akin to"the night of the long knives" and said the sacking was an example of terrible governance."The City of Whittlesea will not attract a quality CEO again while this mob is in power. Why would anyone with credibility walk into a job like that?"
"Simon Overland was an outstanding CEO, I see no reason why he should have been terminated,'' Cr Joseph said."As far as I'm concerned, the council has to be sacked," he said.
