John Cain, Victoria's longest-serving Labor premier, dies.

Mr Cain had suffered a severe stroke on December 10 and was being treated at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

His election ended 27 years of conservative rule and he was hugely popular throughout most of his first two terms. But in 1987 the stock market crashed, and while Labor was narrowly re-elected the following year, the state's economy nosedived, along with the premier's popularity.
