James Merlino, touted as a future Victorian premier, is expected to announce his resignation on Friday, along with three other top figures in the government.

The Andrews government in Victoria is expected to lose four key cabinet ministers on Friday, who would stand down before the state election in November.

The exodus would come as a major blow for Premier Daniel Andrews who has already lost most of his team after two gruelling years during the pandemic. If the 49-year-old was to win again in November and serve out a third full term, he would overtake John Cain and Sir Rupert Hamer to become the longest serving premier since Sir Henry Bolte, who won a record six elections from 1955 to 1970.Mr Andrews has already lost Gavin Jennings, Jill Hennessy, Richard Wynne, Jane Garrett and Steve Herbert among others. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos was pushed out by the inquiry into hotel quarantine.
