We chat with Lightyear's Tailoring and Simulation Supervisor Fran Kalal about building on the world of ToyStory and real-life inspirations to design the costumes. Check out the full interview here:
Chris Evans is leading the ensemble cast of Pixar's newest movie Lightyear as the titular Space Ranger who finds himself marooned on a dangerous alien planet with a group of fellow humans after a mission gone wrong. After multiple failed attempts to recreate his rocket fuel sends him to the future, Buzz must team up with a team of aspiring rookies in the hopes of getting everyone home and stopping the villainous robot, Emperor Zurg.
I know in the presentation last week, you all revealed that you had visited NASA and seen a lot of this stuff firsthand. But I'm curious, in designing the spacesuits for this film, how much would you say you were pulling from that, and how much would you say you were pulling from some of your favorite sci-fi films?
Let's start with that, and it just changed the way that he looked right away. It just gave him this sense of heroism, and it was really exciting to get to do that as early on as when we were working with clay trying to figure out the proportions. We get to put all these really cool details in that show that this is a really resourceful bunch that makes the best out of what they have. We did this really cool thing where when we would look at their costumes. Sometimes we would just look at it in black and white, [and we'd] say,"Let's take out all the color, let's just look at like the silhouette of the character against a plain backdrop.
