Mr Andrews has urged the federal government to pull the so-called gas “trigger” to divert exports for local use.warned of possible electricity shortages in Queensland and NSW and asked big industrial consumers of power to cut back to reduce the risks of blackouts. “The gas producers have long-term international contracts in place, and that gas is a force for energy stability in the region,” Ms King said.

Ms King will also examine pulling the trigger more immediately, instead of waiting until January next year.Ms King said she hoped gas exporters would voluntarily commit more supply to the domestic market – before export controls were potentially imposed – under a new separate heads of agreement between the government and energy industry.

Mr Turnbull, meanwhile, has called on the Albanese government to intervene on gas costs with export and price controls for 90 days via force majeure that could override international export contracts during an extraordinary event.“So in other words, make sure that all the gas we need is available here,” he said on ABC Radio on Monday.

The Australia Institute senior research fellow, David Richardson, called for a tax levy on gas exporters to inject into a fund to give financial relief to gas consumers.“The government would establish a new gas-relief-fund able to receive contributions and to make payments to consumers and businesses affected by high gas prices,” he said.
