Casting the leads was no small feat. Rachel, in particular, was hard to pin down. Jane Sibbett, who played Ross’s lesbian ex-wife Carol was originally considered for the part. “As soon as I got outside of the audition, the phone was ringing : ‘They love you,’” she says. But she was pregnant; the timings of the shoot didn’t work. Even when the producerssettled on Aniston for Rachel, there were problems.
But the show also had a positive impact, dealing with topics such as infertility and single parenthood before other comedy series. In season two, Carol’s same-sex wedding was one of the first to be shown on a US sitcom – and it happened before it was even legal there. Sibbett remembers the furore around the episode when it aired in 1995. She spent weeks on talk shows discussing gay marriage. “It gave me a great opportunity to have conversations with people,” she says.
