Concerts were out for much of 2021, but you could still immerse yourself in your favourite bands with some of the year’s best music books.

This memoir by Nirvana’s drummer and Foo Fighters’ founder and frontman lives up to its title: Grohl is a man full of anecdotes, and delivers them here with brio, as if he’s telling you over a beer .

Then Cobain is gone, and Grohl encapsulates the emptiness: “I was just 25 years old with a whole life ahead of me, but in many ways I felt like my life had ended too.”Grohl’s recall of his subsequent stadium rock success and meeting seemingly every single one of his musical heroes is told with infectious gratitude. Yet, as he admits in the Acknowledgements, there’s more tales to be told: for instance, his long-running feud with Cobain’s widow Courtney Love, who goes unmentioned here.

Needless to say, that was more than could fit in the following year’s documentary on the band’s formative days. But now, just in time for the 25th anniversary of Oasis’s epochal gigs at Knebworth, where they played to 250,000 fans across two nights, comes this tome with the full transcripts.
