Having beaten BHP to the punch on major nickel prospects, Wyloo Metals’ wunderkind CEO Luca Giacovazzi is in charge of one of mining magnate Andrew Forrest’s prized possessions.
Ask Wyloo Metals boss Luca Giacovazzi, 31, if he’s a bit young to be four years into running a pure-play nickel miner that wrestled control of Canada’s fabled “Ring of Fire” basin from resources giant BHP, and he quips: “Don’t hold it against me.”As head of Wyloo, Giacovazzi has the ear of mining magnate Andrew Forrest. The $1.
Nickel is a key part of billionaire Andrew Forrest’s vision to become a critical minerals producer ahead of an expected surge in demand for materials that will be essential to helping decarbonise the planet and minimise harmful global warming. Six of the mines are on care maintenance. “We will look at some of the old mines and think about restarting them. You really can start to bring a lot of nickel back online when you start to revisit some of these projects.”
“We had the biggest mining company in the world saying that they also believed in it, it was just a real validation for us,” says Giacovazzi. “It was a kind of David - Goliath dynamic where we always knew BHP had deeper pockets than us. That sounds ironic when you’re working for a billionaire, but it’s true.”Giacovazzi is pushing for permits for Eagles Nest and hopes to start construction in 2027.
