At just 12, Katie Newton is already preparing to become a firefighter. She's a member of Glenlyon's junior fire brigade, which is breathing new life into the local CFA station.
She's a member of the junior fire brigade in the central Victorian village of Glenlyon, which has been set up to attract the next generation of volunteers.
"It is a good way to learn about the fire brigade and what it is like to be a firefighter, without actually going into the action yet," Katie said.There are currently 15 members in Glenlyon's junior brigade, ranging from 11 to 16 years old. When the ABC visited a regular session last month, the juniors geared up in overalls and hard-hats to practice their skills bowling hoses and spraying water.
