Keith Lees, 72, has been arrested in Sydney after evading capture for nearly three decades in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Meaghan Louise Rose.

A 72-year-old man who has evaded arrest for almost three decades since he allegedly murdered his partner, has been apprehended in Sydney. Keith Lees, 72, was a wanted man over the death of his then 25-year-old girlfriend Meaghan Louise Rose, whose body was found at the base of cliffs at Mooloolaba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in 1997.\Meaghan Louise Rose, 25, was found dead at the bottom of Point Cartwright Cliffs in Queensland in 1997.

Meaghan worked in the disability and aged care sector and was considering going back to study before her death, which was initially treated as a suicide. Police began to re-examine Rose’s death as an alleged murder in 2023, when detectives tracked Lees to a property in Victoria to talk to him about the case. He gave officers a false name, and one day later he fled – his car found abandoned.\Lees was 19 years Rose’s senior when they were together. Queensland Police issued an arrest warrant for Lees and offered a $500,000 reward for any information leading to his arrest. NSW Police officers were finally able to track Lees down to a property on Kenthurst Road in Dural at 8am on Thursday. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on Friday. Queensland Police will apply for his extradition
