A vital service which works with ex-prisoners to prevent them reoffending will close this month after its funding was slashed Glasgow City Council . The Dick Stewart Service helps men convicted of violent crimes reintegrate into the community once they leave jail. A report praised it as "sector-leading" late last year. But the programme, run by the Church of Scotland's CrossReach team, has been unable to house ex-prisoners after the council cut its budget in December.

And it will no longer be able to provide home leave for prisoners from the end of the month if it does not receive further funding. A source from the service said its funding was slashed by Glasgow City Council on December 22 last year. This was just days after the Scottish Government's budget in which one of the key measures was a council tax freeze. Glasgow City Council said Dick Stewart was not given more money as it "decided not to retender for a residential service for men
