More than 300 items will feature in Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto, opening at Melbourne's NGV this summer, direct from Paris — but the fashion icon's Nazi associations will be put to one side.

The National Gallery of Victoria will hope for a return to 'business as usual' this December when it opens its annual summer blockbuster exhibition — Gabrielle Chanel: Fashion Manifesto.

The Melbourne iteration of the show will also feature items from the NGV's own fashion collection, including new donations by their major fashion patron Krystyna Campbell-Pretty. "And then, also, there was this brand that continued to move on [after her death in 1971], and Karl Lagerfeld [creative director for Chanel from 1983-2019], who did this amazing work of reinterpreting her style over and over again. [And so] she was so alive that maybe nobody thought it was necessary [to do a retrospective]."

"Gabrielle Chanel's success was based … also on her ability to grasp and interpret the needs and desires of the women of her time," says Arzalluz. American Vogue described Chanel's clothes as a "uniform for all women of taste, from all backgrounds regardless of their walk of life".
