East Side Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez, the first openly gay man ever to serve on the council, prefaced his question for Castro on Wednesday with this thought: “It is an honor to interview you and I feel a little bit silly interviewing you for a place on the dais.” Those experiences informed her son Julián’s later commitment to creating a state-of-the-art pre-K program during his mayoral tenure.
