Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says Australia needs to have a meaningful public debate about his proposed Indigenous Voice to parliament, urging opponents including Liberal senator Jacinta Price to look at the details put forward by the government.
“It has been five years since the Uluru Statement from the Heart and before that there was five years of consultation leading up to that. This is a debate that has been going for a decade,” he told radio 5AA. “Put very simply, the proposition is this: that we recognise that First Nations people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were here for 60,000 years. That should be recognised in our nation’s birth certificate. It should be a great source of pride and that is what the Constitution represents.“
