The Viva Energy refinery in Geelong could be on the brink of closure as COVID-19 economic pressures make it unviable to keep the doors open.

In an update to shareholders this morning, Viva Energy said a fall in the global demand for oil products, as well the pressures caused by Victorian COVID-19 restrictions, could cause a full shutdown of the facility. The Geelong Refinery in 2008 when it was known as the "Shell Refinery". CEO Scott Wyatt said despite great investment from the business "extreme pressures" were forcing Viva to entertain the idea of shutting the refinery down.

"The impacts of COVID-19 and the restrictions on mobility and the economy are putting extreme pressures on the refining business that we have not experienced before and are not sustainable over the long term," Mr Wyatt said. "We are closely monitoring the evolving situation and will continue to keep our employees, investors and stakeholders updated."Viva Energy Australia said it had noted the roadmap delivered by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews yesterday, and expects it will have an update on the future of its Geelong refinery in October.
