COVID-19 cases have risen in both Geelong and Bendigo this week as Victoria recorded 288 additional infections on Friday, the largest daily increase since the pandemic began.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer has warned Geelong residents to take extra precautions, particularly when commuting to Melbourne’s western suburbs, amid fears about the spread of coronavirus into regional Victoria.

Asked on Friday if authorities would consider placing Victoria's second-biggest city under lockdown alongside Melbourne, Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said the situation in Geelong was being reviewed every day. "We are monitoring the situation very closely and we are encouraging our residents to remain vigilant and continue to social distance," she said.Restaurants and cafes can serve only takeaway in Melbourne under the heightened restrictions but in regional Victoria they can have up to 20 seated patrons per enclosed space. Households can have five visitors in regional Victoria whereas that is now banned in Melbourne.
