Generation Xers – who had to find their first job in the 1990s recession, endured hypercolour T-shirts and found themselves priced out of the nation’s housing market – are now being squeezed by their parents and children.

The so-called Interwar Generation – those aged 75 or more – has shrunk and now accounts for 7.5 per cent of the population, from 10.7 per cent in the 2016 census. “Everything they do centres around technology … whether it’s for educational purposes on the iPad or on their Chromebooks at school,” she said.

Births rose in each state and territory, with the largest increase in Queensland, where they jumped 7.8 per cent to more than 64,100. Births were also up more than 6 per cent in South Australia and in NSW, where more than 101,300 children were born.
