Sydney's new young councillors all feel very lucky to have got in at all. But cost of living and negative politics are keeping young people away from running.
Candidates as young as 19 years of age were elected to councils in Sydney at local government elections.
The teenager wanted to find the best election booth barbecue sausage in Ryde at the 2019 state election, otherwise known as a democracy sausage."I decided that someone had to take one for the team and eat every democracy sausage in Ryde," Mr Last said.Cameron Last tried to eat a sausage on bread at every voting booth in Ryde at the 2019 NSW state election.
"I thought there was a slim chance, but I wasn't holding my breath until the declaration of votes came in," Mr Last said. "I think that's one of the biggest things that a successful politician should do and something that was sorely missing previously on Northern Beaches Council," Ms Harvey said.Libby Austin put her hand up to be the seemingly unwinnable fifth Labor candidate in Penrith Council's East Ward at the election.
Ms Austin said she wants to help improve nightlife in Penrith and establish a youth advisory committee at the council.The rising cost of living kept many younger candidates away from nominating, according to a volunteer organisation that supports youth in government.
