Germany’s ambassador to Australia says Berlin backs Australia’s bid to host global climate talks amid clean energy push.

Germany is encouraging the Albanese government to lift its emissions reductions ambitions, as the European powerhouse throws its support behind Australia’s bid to co-host a, German ambassador to Australia Markus Ederer said Australia was an increasingly important partner to help Germany achieve its clean energy goals after it weaned itself of Russian fossil fuels following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

While Germany has been criticised for being overly cautious in supporting Ukraine, Dr Ederer countered that Berlin was the second-biggest provider of aid after the US, encompassing economic, military and humanitarian support.‘Carefully assessing the risks’ Dr Ederer said Germany had managed to reduce its dependency on Russian oil, gas and coal to practically nil, and the crisis had given a real push to the production of renewable energy.

Although the Albanese government has lifted Australia’s emissions reduction target to 43 per cent by 2030, and embraced the global push for net zero emissions by 2050, Dr Ederer warned more was needed given the “structural threat” that climate change posed.Advertisement
