A giant 18-metre-long whale will be in a Nottinghamshire town this weekend to help teach people about the environment. On Saturday, April 27, explorers in Newark will be able to squeeze into the belly of the large inflatable animal to find out more about the ocean full of rubbish and the impact plastic is having.

The interactive experience will be part of a family-friendly event, also including puppets, live music and comedy from the theatre company Circo Rum Ba Ba. Newark and Sherwood Councillor Emma Oldham, portfolio holder for biodiversity and environmental services at Newark and Sherwood District Council said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our residents to connect with the ocean and to discover more about our commitment to protecting the UK’s waterways.

"This is a fun and interactive show that will be well loved by children and their families. What better way to learn about the importance of our oceans than within a huge whale right in the heart of our town!"It will make for a fantastic spectacle for the whole family to enjoy.

The top of the castle offers great views of the town, and this Saturday there will also be the Race To The Castle paddleboard competition on the River Trent, and there will be a small business showcase in Newark Buttermarket.
