Court hears girl said 'I felt like I should have done something to stop it'

A girl who claimed she was raped by her friend in a Belfast park told police she didn’t initially tell anyone as she thought it was her fault and she would be in trouble.

He has been charged with, and denies, raping two girls who were 16 and a third who was aged 14. He is also charged with sexual assault. It’s the Crown’s case that he raped his 16-year old friend at a South Belfast park on July 2, 2020. She told police that in July 2020 she and friends went to a South Belfast park for a picnic. She said that her schoolfriend - the accused - was present and that he asked her to go for a walk.

She said: “I didn’t want it to happen. I asked him to stop and he ignored it. I had never had sex before. I felt uncomfortable. I was confused. I kept saying to him ‘just stop.’ .. and he didn’t listen.” The girl said in the interview that she “froze”, that her “brain shut down”, that the act itself was sore and that it left her feeling “sick to my stomach ... I just felt disgusting”.

The girl also told police that in the aftermath, she initially didn’t tell anyone but started “acting up”.
