It’s a busy day at NSW parliament, where MPs arriving for a sitting day will no doubt be keeping an eye on the ICAC’s long-awaited report.
The expectation is that the report will be publicly available this morning, but it may not be released at 9am sharp. You can read the latest updates here.A string of high-profile witnesses gave evidence before the ICAC inquiry. Cruickshank gave evidence at the ICAC that the then-premier called her on July 13, 2018, after Maguire had given evidence at an earlier ICAC inquiry into Canterbury Council. He resigned from parliament days later on August 3.
“The matter is listed for mention on 21 August 2023 at the Downing Centre Local Court,” a spokesperson for the ODPP said. Maguire’s lawyer Jim Harrowell said outside court that “my client denies that he’s behaved in a corrupt way”.“We obviously haven’t seen it. It’s important to remember what ICAC’s role is in this, sometimes people get confused.
The former premier told the ICAC she had “no knowledge” of wrongdoing by Maguire and did not think she had any information that could have benefited the corruption watchdog.The inquiry heard Maguire, then the Liberal MP for Wagga Wagga, told Berejiklian in a tapped phone call in September 2017 that he believed he could make $1.5 million from a land deal. But Berejiklian said she may not have been listening and Maguire often spoke about “pie-in-the-sky” proposals that did not come to fruition.
“I don’t even know if I listened properly,” Berejiklian said. “He was always talking about pie-in-the-sky things.”Berejiklian asked Maguire to quit politics in July 2018 as a result of his evidence at an earlier ICAC inquiry into the former Canterbury Council. He formally resigned in August. Berejiklian had a team of high-powered barristers acting for her, including Sydney barristers Bret Walker, SC, and Sophie Callan, SC.
