The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the novel coronavirus a global health emergency, confirming it has escalated into an unprecedented outbreak.
The World Health Organisation has taken the “extraordinary” step of declaring coronavirus a Global Emergency as health experts fear the virus will ravage low-income countries with “weaker health systems”. The declaration – one of only six made in the past decade – means resources will be able to be sent to low socio-economic countries the WHO fears is ill-equipped to deal with the threat.
“Our greatest concern is the potential for the virus to spread to other countries with weaker health systems, which are ill-prepared to deal with it.” The emergency declaration comes as a confirmed case in Tibet means the virus has now made its way to every region in mainland China. More than 7700 cases have been confirmed and authorities – chiefly in ground zero Wuhan – are desperately trying to muster resources to check another 12,000 suspected cases.
