The expert has explained a side effect of the UK's miserable summer
The summer months were plagued with rainy conditions as the days of sunshine were few and far between. The travel expert said this has boosted booking for autumn cruises and warned prices have gone up 11% compared with last year.
He posted on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter: "We are sailing, apparently, because the British summer was such a wash-out. TUI reports occupancy for autumn cruises up 9% and prices up 11%. Typical prices I am seeing on Marella are over £200 per person per night."READ MORE: Doctor shares three foods that accelerate ageing
In his column in the Independent, Simon shared high prices for customers sailing on Tui's cruise brand, Marella, on what is usually an off-peak time. He said: "On an early October one-week cruise from Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca. visiting Italy and Corsica, only a “Grand Suite Cabin” is available, at a price of £1,697 per person including flights to and from Liverpool.
TUI confirmed this is a result of the washout summer as the travel giant said in a pre-close trading statement: "Poorer summer weather in the source markets has boosted bookings and demand in autumn at higher rates." Norwegian Cruise Line also reported record revenue between April and June as figures were one-third up from the same spell in 2023. Travel agents belonging to the Advantage Travel Partnership also spoke of high demand as the company’s president, Jacqueline Dobson, said: “It’s a clear indication that people are keen to make up for lost holidays – and escape some of the wet weather we’ve been seeing in the UK over the summer months.
