With every passing military failure in Ukraine, the Russian leader retreats further and further into his own bubble. If he wants to ward off a violent challenge from his rivals, he needs to act quickly and decisively, writes Dr. Alexey Muraviev.
Kyiv’s military success was a major confidence boost for the powers that be at NATO, who can now finally say their efforts at containing Russian aggression are bearing fruit.
The success of Russia’s defensive operation in the Kherson region, where the Ukrainian military made modest advances and sustained heavy losses, gave the Kremlin the erroneous illusion that everything was under control. "We would describe you not just as the leader of Russia, but also as a leader of the world, because you are controlling and organising stability all over the world," Hlaing said during the sycophantic bilateral meeting with Putin.
But as much as he tries to manifest that reality, the state of play on the Russian home front is rapidly changing. As part of those national celebrations, Putin took part in the launching of the Sun of Moscow - now the tallest Ferris Wheel in Europe. Russians will not have been fooled by the transparent statements made by the country’s Ministry of Defence about “the organised retreat” and the “stabilisation of the frontline”.
