How's this for a bit of gamesmanship? Team USA sneakily enforced a little-known rule early on day three of the PresidentsCup against a Team International rookie, and it paid off big time
On the second hole, Li found the trees on the right side and punched out, except he played out of order - it wasn’t his turn to hit.
Thomas quickly went over to a rules official to discuss his options, and decided to enforce a little-known rule. In match play there’s no penalty if a player plays out of turn, but the opponent can decide to recall the shot and force the player to play in the correct order instead. That’s what Thomas did, and it quickly became Li’s turn again. But on his second opportunity, he couldn’t escape the trees cleanly, striking a tree branch and sending his ball backwards. He then hit another tree on his next shot.
This took him out of the hole entirely, and while Leishman had a chance to compete with the two Americans given the four-ball format, he couldn’t do so and a Thomas birdie put the US one up. As PGA Tour golf writer Ben Everill put it on Twitter, the US was employing some “early gamesmanship”.Early gamesmanship from usa as they enforce to return his ball to the trees and re hit for playing out of turn. First attempt was a great escape... but now he’s failed to escape and it’s a potentially huge move to get in the rookies head.-Hits driver against captain's orders on 1st hole
